Unfortunately, AOL recently decided to roll out CA's "Pest Patrol" as part of it's security offering, renaming it AOL Spyware Protection. This CA/AOL product has a bug which corrupts MS Windows in a way that causes GenSmarts to fail with either the error code LP5 or the "program has been damaged" message. Customers are reporting to us that it's also causing other problems on their PC's (unrelated to GenSmarts), and suggest the easiest fix is to simply uninstall this new "Spyware protection" module until AOL get's it fixed. Here's AOL's instructions (it's only the AOLŪ Spyware Protection you want to remove - you wouldn't want to remove the virus protection piece):

We have been in contact with both CA and AOL regarding this, as have other software vendors whose products are being corrupted during execution by this new AOL release. CA has been responsive and appears to be actively working on a fix. We've been unable to get any response from AOL.
See this post for a few related details if you like:

For reference, see this post about what AOL did (the first link has some customer feedback at the bottom regarding difficulties AOL customers are having):

A few of you have emailed us about alternate spyware protection products... I'd say the two most popular are Spybot and AdAware and both have free versions for personal use.
AdAware is the easier to install/use of the two:

Spybot is probably just as good or perhaps better technically, but isn't quite as easy to use:

Here's an update from the AOL team responsible for fixing the bug in their Spyware Protection product:
"We had a few issues that surfaced in our beta test and had to delay the launch of the fix until Monday, Feb 5th."
So it sounds like a repaired version of AOL Spyware Protection is in the process of being deployed. If you find you have this problem now, drop us a note at support@GenSmarts.com so we can let AOL know that there are people who apparently still don't have the fixed version of Spyware Protection. |

Another update... AOL ran into issues with their deployment of this fix on 2/5 and is hoping to try again on 2/9. You should get a message asking permission to install a "critical AOL Spyware Protection update"... that will be your clue that you've received the fixed version that will eliminate problems running software such as GenSmarts.

From what I hear from AOL, only 18% of their customers were able to get the update... so odds are you didn't receive it yet. Here's the latest from AOL:
---------------------------- Several hours after releasing the fix [aka Update for AOL Spyware Protection] on Tuesday 2/6, it was determined that the network load on the backend was critically high, and delivery of the fix was temporarily suspended. Over the past two days, the operations team has been working on a solution to allow re-enabling delivery. It is expected that the fix will again be made available for automated download on Friday 2/9, and network traffic will be monitored throughout the day to ensure there are no further delivery issues. High level estimates indicate that approximately 18% of users received the fix during the initial hours when it was available. We are hopeful that the operational changes completed this week will allow us to resume delivering the fix to the remaining users without further incident.
----------------------------
I think you'll recognize when you get the fix as you'll be promted with the "critical update" message.

| As of Feb-17-2007, AOL customers are reporting getting a notification from AOL requesting them to download an update to the AOL Spyware Protection. After applying the update, GenSmarts works normally on their PC's. |
